A Multicultural Portrait of the American Revolution (Marshall Cavendish Corporation)
Published in Library Binding by Benchmark Books (September, 1995)
Author: Fran Zell
Average review score:

The American Revolution seen through multicultural eyes
The explanation for what constitutes "A Multicultural Portrait fo the American Revolution" is established earlier in this juvenile history book. The Perspectives series examines the American Revolution and other topics not only from the perspective of the white European-American who make up the majority of the U.S. population, but also from that of people of color and other ethnic minorities. The rationale, of course, is that people of color, along with women, are largely ignored in standard American history textbooks. In that regard, the American Revolution is a good place to start re-telling, as it were, the history of the country. After all, when the white European men who signed the Declaration of Independence committed themselves to the idea of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" and declared that "all men are created equal," the word "man" meant adult, white, male, free, property owners. Consequently, this book is about the attitudes members of these other groups held toward the Revolutionary War and the "American" ideals it embodied.

It is not surprising, therefore, that Fran Zell begins this book with the Boston Massacre, where the first man to die in the cause of American liberty was Crispus Attucks, the son of an African father and an American Indian mother. For the most part the familiar story of the movement for independence is related, with details on how colonial women helped the cause, worked into the narrative. More often the multicultural dimensions are provided in short sidebars on topics such as the communication system slaves used, the value of American Indian education, and the dilemma George Washington faced as a slave owner. The most interesting chapter is the last one: Freedom Rings, But Not for All. This looks at what happened to the American Indians after the war finished, initial efforts towards freedom for slaves, how the map of the country changed, and the Revolution's legacy to all Americans.

Hopefully, by looking at the American Revolution from this multicultural perspective young readers will better appreciate the legacy of the democratic government with a Constitution that guarantees basic freedoms to everyone, (even colored non-European women). "A Multicultural Portrait of the American Revolution" is illustrated with historic paintings, etchnings, and drawings, that help to provide a sense of the times under discussion. Ultimately the multicultural emphasis comes through the introduction of colored faces, such as the Mohawk leader Joseph Brant or the African slave Phillis Wheatley who became world famous as a poet. The story of American history remains largely the same in this volume, but it is the faces of the people on the stage of history that are different.

Multiple Choice Questions for the Mrcpsych Part 1 (Multiple Choice Question in Psychiatry)

Authors: Jane Marshall and E. Jane Marshall
Average review score:

A very good book for MRCPsych part I Exam
This is a very good book for the MRCPsych part I exam. Its questions cover most areas of the part I syllabus and its answers are reliable. Its weak point is that there are very few questions on psychology, an area very popular with the part I examiners in recent years.

Nasb-Niv: Parallel New Testament in Greek and English With Interlinear Translation
Published in Hardcover by Zondervan (March, 1987)
Author: Alfred Marshall
Average review score:

Looks like Greek to me...
If I read Greek this would be a fine bible. On each page the first and last quarter contain the NASB and NIV versions while the middle half contains the Greek.

I did find a wonderful use for this bible, it made a wonderful gift for my father-in-law who is soon to complete seminary.

On Hobbes
Published in Paperback by Wadsworth Publishing (18 October, 1999)
Author: Marshall Missner
Average review score:

Good.
A good introduction to Hobbes. I doubt most people will take the time to read this book. Hobbes' works seem like the precursor to so many ideas and philosophies that I cannot believe more people are not familiar with this great political philosopher. My only problem is that Missner does not go more in-depth. Perhaps, he was given set guidelines by the editors.

On Signs
Published in Paperback by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (September, 1985)
Author: Marshall Blonsky
Average review score:

Semiotics, Please
This is a great collection of essays if you're interested in learning more about semiotics. The main strength of the book is that various author's (or practitioners) theories and methods are exposed. Although some of the essays are 'difficult' and might require a little more background in semiotic theory, most of the essays are pretty approachable for the general reader.

One Bugle No Drums: The Marines at Chosin Reservoir
Published in Hardcover by Algonquin Books (October, 1986)
Authors: William B. Hopkins and S. L. A. Marshall
Average review score:

Close observation at Chosin, although not under fire
In general, this is about (part of) Chosin operation. The author was the commander of H&R company of 1st Battalion, 1st Marine during Chosin operation. He gave a good account about the hardship the marines endured during the operation. Mind that his battalion was assigned the task of taking Hill 1081 and wrestled the control of Funchilin Pass out from superior Chinese Communist Part (CCP) forces. Unfortunately, he was in such a position that he spent most of his time staying very close to battalion HQ and could not provide more details about the fighting. (Interesting readers should look up S.L.A. Marshall's "Battle at Best". There is a chapter dedicated to the battle of Funchilin Pass.) But, it is still a good book with the first hand account of the Chosin. Of course, nobody who are interesting in Korea War would want to miss the two very valuable reports about CCP troops' attack patterns, written by S.L.A. Marshall himself, attached at the end of the book.
